          SECOND SPEECH OF XENOPHON ZOLOTAS
                      IN WASHINGTON D.C. IN 1959.

As promised we are going to publish the second speech of
Professor Xenophon  Zolotas in the annual meeting, Board of
 Governonrs,  Wathington D.C.   on October 2, 1959.

I personally chose that date which marks exactly 56 years to the
 date.

Here is how he addressed his audience
and keep in mind that he spoke to an American audience using
only Greek words..   That is the power of the Hellenic language.

                                     THE SPEECH

       Kyrie,
It is Zeus' anathema on our epoch and the heresy of our
economic method and policies that we should agonize the
Skylla of nomismatic plethora and the Charybdis of economic
anaemia. It is not my idiosyncracy to be ironic or sarcastic but
my diagnosis would be that politicians are rather cryptopletho
      rists.
Although they emphatically stigmatize nomistmatic plethora,
they energize it through their  tactics and proctices.

Our policies should be based more on economic and less on
political criteria. Our gnomon has to be a metron between
eonomic strategic and philanthropic scopes. In an epoch
characterrized by monopolies, oligopolies, monopolistic anta-
gonism nd polymorphous inelasticities, our policies have to be
more orthological, but this sould not be metamorphosed into
plethorophobia, which is endemic among academic econo-
mists.  Nomismatic symmetry should not antagonize economic
acme.  A greater hormonization between the practices of the
      economic, nomismatic archons is basic.

Parallel to this we have to synchronize and harmonize more
and more our economic and nomismatic policies panethnically

These scopes are more practicable now, when the prognostics
of  the political and economic barometer are halcyonic.
The history of our didimus organization on this sphere has
been didatic and their gnostic practices will always be a tonic
to the polyonymous and idiomorphous ethnical economies.

Therefore, I sympathize, although not without criticism one or
two themes with the apostles and the hierarchy of our organs
in their zeal to program orthodox economic and nomismatic
policies.  I apologize for having tyranized you with my Hellenic
    phraseology.
In my epilogue I emphasize my eulogy to the philoxenous
aytochtons of this cosmopolitan metropolis and my encomium
   to you Kyrie, the stenographers.

    HISTORIC SPEECHES OF XENOPHON ZOLOTAS
                          IN WASHINGTON D.C.

Professor Xenophon Zolotas ( who was also a short-term minister of Greece ) made two speeches in Washington, USA
that remained in HISTORY because of their content and their
language. The language- apart from conjunctions, articles and
prepositions- was Greek, but the english-speaking audience had
no trouble understanding Zolotas' speech.

1957 Annual Meeting, Boards of Governors, Washington D.C.

At that time Professor Zolotas was the President of the Bank of
Greece and he was managing the National financial Obligation.

                          Addressing  his  audience

"  I always wished to address this Assembly in Greek, but realized
that it would have been indeed  "Greek" to all present in this
room.  I found out , however, that I could make my address in
Greek which would still be English to everybody. With your
permission Mr. Chairman, I shall do it now, using with the
exception of aricles and prepositions, only  Greek words."

                                 THE SPEECH

 " Kyrie,
I eulogize the archons of the Panethnic Numismatic Thesaurus
and the Ecumenical Trapeza for the orthodoxy of their axioms
methods and policies, although there is an episode of
cacophony of the Trapeza with Hellas.  With entusiasm we
dialogue and synagonize at the synods of our didymous Orga-
nizations in which polymorphous economic ideas and dogmas
are analyzed and synthesized. Our critical problems such as the
nomismatic plethora generate some agony and melancholy.
This phenomenon is characteristic of our epoch. But, to my
thesis we have the dynamism to program therapeutic practices
as a prophylaxis from chaos and catastrophe.
In parallet a panethnic unhypocritical economic synergy and
harmonization in a democratic climate is basic.

I apologize for my eccentric monologue. I emphasize my eucha-
ristiria to you Kyrie, to the eugenic and generous American
Ethnos and to the organizations and protagonists of the
   Amphictyony and the gastronomic symposia."

This speech is the first one Professor Zolotas gave in Washington
Two years later in 1959, he returned and gave another speech.

                 PART TWO
                       OF
             " The Sponsor "

According to Historians and Archeologists Lycurgus
was the first who tried to finance the construction of
a stadium.  While in charge of the city's administra-
tion (300-306 BC), the renowned orator attempted to
construct the ancient stadium beside the hill of
Ardittos.
This particular location was selected because it was
near the Ilisos River and was deemed suitable for the
building of a stadium.

However, the broader area remained in its original
state and only the sports area was surrounded by a
stone wall.

Four and a half centuries later, in the year 131 AD,
Herod Atticus was given the responsibility of organi-
sing the prizes for the Panathenaia, Athens most famous games, and so he undertook the construction
of the marble stadium.

Born in 103 AD Herod Atticus was the offspring of a
very wealthy family from Marathon in Attica. His
grandfather, Ipparchos, had a property worth 100
million sertetii ( approximately 10 tons of gold).

So, Herod had enough to be considered one of the
richest men in Athens. He proceeded to construct a
stadium with a capacity of 50.000 seats.

This stadium was so impressive that Philostratus and
Pausanias considered it  " the wonder of the age."

Herod also helped ancient Olympia financially and
provided a solution to the problem of the area,i.e.
the water sufficiency. Due to the great turn out of the
Games, it was impossible to quench the thirst of the million of spectators in the middle of the summer.

So, he had a huge water reservoir constructed with
his own money, providing thus a definite solution
to the problem.

p.s.  As I stated before Atlanta Georgia , is a Pioneer,
when in 1996 the Olympic Games that took
place there were fully covered by sponsors, for
the first time in the history of the Games.

                HEROD  ATTICUS       103 AD

                   THE FIRST  " SPONSOR "

 Preface

Sponsors and sponsorship today is a very important act which supports almost totally
commercial, artistic, intellectual, athetic and a
number of ventures.

It has become possibly the ultimate financial
power that sustains all the above mentioned.

But, when, did it begin? where? how? and who
started it??

Today we will take a journey to the deep past and
examine the official History that points no other
place than the Ancient Greece.

                          PART  ONE

Sponsorship was first established in Ancient Greece. Wealthy Athenians participated in the
expenses of the state and contributed financially
to the athletic and cultural events, thereby earning social recognition in return.

The country, in acknowledgement of their contri-
bution, had their names carved in marble stones,
so that the rest of the population could learn
about their generosity and pay due respect.

The inception of sponsorship dates from the time
of the Athenian democracy of Cleisthenes, at the
end of the 6th century B.C..  However, it fully
"bloomed" in the 5th century B.C. the Golden
Age of Pericles.  It was an era when thought,
literature, and the arts reached their highest
expression.

Sponsorship was, at the start, quite specific in its
field of application, concerned exclusively with
the financial support of the arts ( choragus= leader of the chorus),  Yet over the years, and
especially today, the concept of sponsorship has
expanded to cover every form of financial contri-
bution to any sector of society, while it also includes commercial sponsorship,  that is, promotion, agreements with profit- making Orga-
nisations ( from: Sponsorship by Thalis P. Kou-
toupis, Galaiou Publications, 1996).

We shall continue with  PART TWO , in a few days.
